Chinese New Year is just two weeks away. This morning we did some spring cleaning in our house before heading downtown for brunch. After brunch, we went shopping at Boulevard Hypermart at Imperial Mall.

There are large crowds at the shopping malls and Chinese New Year music fills the air. You cannot help but be gripped by the Chinese New Year mood.

As my wife was choosing some potatoes for cooking curry during the Chinese New Year, I saw this potato that looked like it had a face…..but this potato definitely wasn’t in a Chinese New Year mood……its mouth was curved downwards as if it was angry or unhappy. I could not resist taking a photo of it…..my son said it looked like a tortoise head or o-kui-tow in Hokkien, haha!

I have been reading the book “The 8-Day Internet Wonder” by Edwin John published by True Wealth Sdn Bhd.  This book is quite easy to read and it lays out a step-by-step guide to making money online.

One of the ways to draw traffic to your blog according to the book is add your blog to Technorati by a process called “claiming your blog”.  Technorati is a blog search engine that has plenty of information on all kinds of blogs.

As part of the procedure to “claim my blog”, I have been asked by Technorati to insert this code VTC9Y78ASW7K within a new blog post so that is what I am doing now.

Miri is aiming at becoming the first green city in Malaysia with May 20 as the deadline. On May 20 this year, Miri will be celebrating its 5th anniversary as a city.

Since taking office, Mayor Lawrence Lai has impressed Mirians with his leadership and initiative to transform Miri into a better municipality. He has been busy visiting many parts of the municipality to listen to complaints from the people and trying to carry out improvements where necessary.

One of the first step undertaken by the Mayor towards making Miri a green city is appealing to Mirians to lend their wholehearted support to make Miri the first city to say no to plastic bags everyday.

The city council’s “Say No To Plastic” campaign launched on August 30 last year has garnered the support of local hypermarkets and supermarkets that give no free plastic bags on Sunday. With effect from this month, the no-plastic days were increased to 3 days every week from Friday to Sunday.

The city council has always been active in planting trees and plants in the city and the mayor has pledged to plant a minimum of 1000 trees per year. I can see nice landscaping in many areas of the city which makes the city look much more beautiful….kudos to the city council!

The city council is planning to hold landscaping competitions among schools to inculcate the “go green” culture among students. It is also encouraging all government departments and agencies to carry out landscaping too.

A major green project that the city council will implement is the bicycle track from Taman Selera to Lutong in two phases. Under the first phase, the bicycle track will link Taman Selera to Miri City Fan while the second phase will link Miri City Fan to Lutong. The aim of the project is to encourage more people to use bicycles thereby reducing the number of motor vehicles on the road.

The city council is studying the feasibility of installing solar or LED lightings for the whole city. With about 17,000 street lights in the city, the council is paying over RM7 million in electricity bills annually. It is estimated that the council can save between 60 to 70 percent in the electrical bills. And Miri will also become the first city in Malaysia to have such lightings if the project is implemented.

I wasn’t born in Miri but I have lived in Miri for almost 30 years and have come to love the city dearly. It is in my opinion the best place to live in Sarawak.

A couple of days ago, I received my first Clickbank affiliate commission cheque. Though this is a small $90.33 ( USD) cheque, I am happy as this shows that affiliate marketing does work. I have not put any effort into my affiliate marketing so this cheque may be the catalyst for me to take affiliate marketing a little more seriously.

picture7

About half a year ago, I received my first ever affiliate commission payment from a program that I wrote about in one of my blog post. That was a bigger cheque amounting to over $300.

Affiliate marketing looks easy but it isn’t that easy in practice. There are so many things to learn that one often becomes overwhelmed by the avalanche of information. We get bombarded by offers from all sorts of so-called internet marketing gurus that it is often difficult to distinguish the fake gurus from the real gurus. All these gurus are trying to pitch their programs to you as the “must have” program to succeed in internet marketing. So you end up buying one program after another and in the process get yourself totally confused by what you should do next. I know because I have been through that.

I think the better way is to seek out a guru who is really successful and then stick to his program with laser-like focus. For me, one of the first guru that immediately pops into my mind is Ewen Chia of Singapore. He is regarded as one of the top affiliate marketer in the world…..indeed he is considered a super affiliate marketer! For the record, he makes a seven-figure income (and in US dollars) annually from internet marketing.

Lesson Number One

A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow, and asked him, “Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?”
rabbit3
The crow answered: “Sure, why not.”

So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Management Lesson: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

Lesson Number Two

A turkey was chatting with a bull.
turkey2

“I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighed the turkey, “but I haven’t got the energy.

“Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?” replied the bull. “They’re packed with nutrients.”

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

Management Lesson: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.

Lesson Number Three

When the body was first made, all the parts wanted to be Boss. The brain said, “I should be Boss because I control the whole body’s responses and functions.”

The feet said, “We should be Boss as we carry the brain about and get him to where he wants to go.” The hands said, “We should be the Boss because we do all the work and earn all the money.” And so it went on and on with the heart, the lungs and the eyes until finally the asshole spoke up.

All the parts laughed at the idea of the asshole being the Boss. So the asshole went on strike, blocked itself up and refused to work. Within a short time the eyes became crossed, the hands clenched, the feet twitched, the heart and lungs began to panic and the brain fevered. Eventually they all decided that the asshole should be the Boss, so the motion was passed.

All the other parts did all the work while the Boss just sat and passed out the shit!

Management Lesson: You don’t need brains to be Boss, any asshole will do!

Lesson Number Four

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold that the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out!
cowdung2
He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard he bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him!

Management Lessons Summary:

1. Not everyone who drops shit on you is your enemy.
2. Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.
3. When you’re in deep shit, keep your mouth shut!

Last week my wife, my mother-in-law, two of my sister-in-laws and I dropped by Imperial Hotel to try out their Snack+Coffee Super Hot Deal which is available between 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm everyday at the Imperial Restaurant . A couple of my friends have told me that it is a good offer.

For RM4.99, you get a cup of hot tea or coffee plus a piece of snack of your choice. And if you are a Boulevard Family Card holder, you will get a 10% discount. They have 4 snacks for you to choose from: chocolate moist cake with cheese, Mediterranean croissant, tiramisu cheese cake and grilled chicken sandwich with corn pepper bread.

We ordered 2 slices of chocolate moist cake with cheese, 1 slice of tiramisu cheese cake and 2 pieces of Mediterranean croissants. I only tasted the cakes but not the Mediterranean croissant. The cakes were nice though the chocolate moist cake was a bit too sweet.

The bill came to only RM22.45 ( USD 6.60) after the 10% discount. It was really a fantastic deal. If you are meeting someone for a discussion in the afternoon, you might want to consider meeting at the Imperial Restaurant. The cool and quiet ambience is way better than say Secret Recipe or Starbucks. And the cost is just a fraction of what it would cost at Secret Recipe or Starbucks.

On April 1 1961 (yes, April Fool Day), a Scottish girl was born to a couple who already had nine children. At her birth, her mother was 47 and during the difficult childbirth, the girl was briefly deprived of oxygen and was later diagnosed as having learning difficulties. She was often bullied as a child and was nicknamed “Susie Simple” at school.

After leaving school with few qualifications, she took singing and acting lessons. In 1995 her audition for Michael Barrymore’s “My Kind of People” was filmed. The amateur video shows Barrymore was apparently more interested in mocking her than in her singing ability.

After winning several local singing competitions, she was urged by her mother to enter Britain’s Got Talent. She almost abandoned her plan to enter the show as she believed she was too old and that it was a young person’s game. Her mother’s death motivated her to go on Britain’s Got Talent as a tribute to her mother.

In August 2008 she applied for an audition for the third series of Britain’s Got Talent and was accepted after a preliminary audition in Glasgow. She sang “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables in the first round. When she first took to the stage, the initially cynical attitude of the audience and the judges was obvious….she was “prejudged” because of her appearance. This cynicism was transformed into a standing ovation when she finished her rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream”. Her initial demeanour and homely appearance caused the judges and the audience to be “waiting for her to squawk like a duck”.

A new superstar was born and the world came to know about this Scottish lady Susan Boyle. Boyle’s first album “I Dreamed A Dream” was released on November 23 2009 and has enjoyed phenomenal success worldwide, racking up sales of a few million copies so far! Her album raced to the top of the charts in US, UK and many countries worldwide.

Boyle’s story is a like a fairy tale about overcoming adversity and prejudice and a rebuke to people’s tendency to judge others based on their physical appearance. Her performance is a victory for talent and artistry in a culture obsessed with physical attractiveness and presentation.

I bought Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed A Dream” last week and have been enjoying her renditions of “I Dreamed A Dream”, “Wild Horses”, “Cry Me A River”, “How Great Thou Art”, “You’ll See”, “Daydream Believer”, “Up To The Mountain”, “Amazing Grace”, “Who I Was Born To Be”, “Proud”, “The End Of The World” and “Silent Night”. You can find the album at Speedy Video in Miri……go buy it and enjoy the music!
