Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter of late music diva Whitney Houston and R&B singer Bobby Brown, died on July 26, surrounded by her family, at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, Georgia, nearly six months after she was found unconscious in a bathtub in her Georgia home. She was 22.
On Jan. 31, Bobbi Kristina was found unresponsive in her bathtub, and was then rushed to North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, Georgia, where she was put on a ventilator. She was later transferred to Atlanta’s Emory Uinersity Hospital where she was placed in a medically induced coma.
In March this year, she was transferred to a nearby medical rehabilitation facility, but her condition remained unchanged as she had suffered “global and irreversible brain damage”. Brown, who never regained consciousness, mirrored the way her superstar mother died in 2012.
“She is finally at peace in the arms of God,” her family said in a statement. “We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months.”
Bobbi Kristina was music royalty as the daughter of two superstars — and the granddaughter of gospel great, Cissy Houston, the mother of Whitney, who died in February 2012.
Much about what happened before she was found remains murky. Police have been investigating the circumstances but have not announced their findings nor charged anyone with anything.
But late last month, Bobbi Kristina’s conservator sued Nick Gordon — who has been described as Bobbi’s boyfriend and husband— for $10 million, accusing him of having physically abused Bobbi and having improperly withdrawn $11,000 from her bank account after she was in a coma.
Whitney Houston brought Gordon into her household as an orphan at the age of 12, raising him with her daughter after her divorce from Bobby Brown in 2007. Gordon wore a large tattoo of Houston’s face on his arm and called the singer “mom,” but she never adopted him or included him in her will.
Bobbi Kristina had been very close to her mother and Houston’s death reportedly hit her very hard. Bobbi Kristina was in the lobby of the Beverly Hilton when she was informed of her mother’s death. She suffered a hysterical breakdown and had to be sedated and hospitalized.
Following her mother’s untimely death, Bobbi Kristina sought comfort in Gordon and began a romantic relationship. They got engaged in October 2012, just eight months after Houston’s passing. The couple claimed to have tied the knot on January 9 last year but her father later said the pair had never legally wed.
Bobbi Kristina often took to social media to blast critics who called her relationship with Gordon incest, insisting that her mother never formally adopted Gordon and that she would be happy to see the two linked romantically.
The discovery of Bobbi Kristina in the bathtub by Gordon and their friend Max Lomas came just days before the third anniversary of her mother’s passing. Bobbi Kristina suffered from an apparent drug overdose, the circumstances of which were eerily similar to those of her mother’s passing. Houston’s death was ruled an accident as a result of drowning, but the medical examiner also stated that cocaine and drug-related heart disease contributed to her demise.
Only 18 years old when her mother died, Bobbi Kristina became the sole inheritor of Houston’s estate. The inheritance was estimated at nearly $115 million.
