If you happened to see a lot of ‘perverts’ on the subway yesterday and is wondering what was going on, you’ll know why after reading this.

Yesterday was the 10th annual No Pants Subway Ride. Started in 2002, with just seven participants, the No Pants Subway Ride has turned into an international tradition. This year, thousands of people from 43 cities, in 16 countries joined their New York peers and boarded the subway in their undies.

In New York City, hundreds of crazy people in Park Slope and Williamsburg joined the subway ride to Union Square in their undies on the L train even though it may have been below-freezing outside.

There were six meeting points around the city in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. At 3pm, the participants gathered at the meeting points were divided into groups for different train cars. Once on the train, the participants proceeded to take off their pants as if that was a perfectly normal activity on a subway train. If asked by non-participants why they were not wearing pants, Improve Everywhere suggests that the participants tell people that either they “forgot to wear pants” or “they were getting uncomfortable.” Eventually, all the groups converged in Union Square.

The No Pants Subway Ride is sponsored by Improv Everywhere. Participants must be willing to meet the following requirements:

1. Be willing to take your pants off on the subway train.

2. Be able to keep a straight face while riding sans pants.

On the train, the pant-less participants had non-participants either staring, admiring, busy shooting photos, or frowning in distaste — with the participants keeping their faces straight and pretending to be engrossed in reading The Brooklyn Paper or doing other things that they would normally do on the subway.

No Pants Subway Ride is the brainchild of Improv Everywhere, an organization that takes pride in its mission to create “scenes of chaos and joy in public places.” The Improv Everywhere’s annual prank of riding the subway in undies is all in the name of fun. So have fun watching the video.
