“Imagine” this. Had “Give Peace A Chance” guy John Lennon not been shot dead in New York in 1980, the global icon of anti-Vietnam war activism and youthful rebellion would be celebrating his 70th anniversary today.

Lennon, who was born Oct. 9, 1940, in Liverpool, northwestern England, was shot dead by Mark David Chapman outside his Dakota apartment building on Dec. 8, 1980. Chapman, 55, has been in jail since the shooting and was recently denied parole for the sixth time.

The seemingly immortal Beatle who died in 1980 at 40, will be honored in a variety of ways — from crowds expected to gather at Strawberry Fields in Central Park, opposite his Manhattan apartment building to sing his songs, to a birthday party at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, a special Google doodle, a new movie “Nowhere Boy” and a peace monument in his British hometown of Liverpool.

The Cleveland party Friday, part of an all-Lennon weekend, also included a time capsule containing a video by fans, a DVD about his life, books and his music. The capsule will be opened on his 100th birthday, 30 years from now.

Other time capsules will be dedicated in Liverpool and in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik, site of the Imagine Peace Tower, a tribute to Lennon from his widow, Yoko Ono.

Google’s homepage sports an interactive doodle that links to a 32-second track of Lennon’s popular song “Imagine.” As it plays, the logo generates different pictures including that of a butterfly and flower.

In Liverpool, Lennon’s son Julian and former wife Cynthia will join European ambassadors for the unveiling of the Global Peace Initiative’s peace monument.

“Nowhere Boy,” a biopic tracing his pre-Beatles teen years in Liverpool, opened in select cities yesterday.

77-year-old Ono, whom he married in 1969, is spending his birthday in Reykjavik, Iceland for a concert and the annual Imagine Peace Tower Ceremony.

John Lennon & Yoko Ono

Ono, 77, has been in Iceland for the re-lighting of the Imagine Peace Tower, an installation she created in memory of one of the world’s most influential songwriters.

She said: “It was very hard because it was a sudden thing that happened, he wasn’t ill for a long time or anything, it’s just, we were talking before that you know, and, it was very hard.”

“I think I am getting over it in a kind of way, in my own unique way, but it’s still lingering”.

Ono added: “It’s very interesting, you know, that songs like Gimme Some Truth mean a lot now, and of course Give Peace a Chance and Imagine. All his political songs really have a lot of meaning right now for people.”

The Japanese-born artist believes Lennon, who became a symbol of the anti-Vietnam war movement, would still be politically active were he alive today, but that after his death it was up to her to carry on his message of peace.

She said: “We were partners and it was almost like we were in a battleground, really struggling you know, for peace, for world peace, against all odds.

“Many people didn’t like us speaking out about war, and war and peace, and then suddenly he was gunned down so I had to continue as a partner.”

John Lennon was born on Oct 9th, 1940 and formed the legendary English music band “The Beatles” with Paul McCartney in 1960. The band also included George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

Lennon was ranked the fifth greatest singer of all time by the Rolling Stones magazine. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame after his death in 1980.

When it comes to memorable goal celebrations, Roger Milla’s corner flag hip-shaking immediately comes to mind. But the effort from Icelandic side Stjarnan blows Roger’s feat out of the water. Taken hook, line and sinker – there’s no doubt that this is the best goal celebration we’ve ever seen.

During a match between Stjarnan and Fylkir in Iceland at the end of last month, the goal celebration after a game-winning kick ended up being better than the actual winning goal. After striker Halldor Orri Bjornsson scored on a penalty kick in extra time to take a 2-1 lead, he pulled out an imaginary fishing rod and casted his line out.  Then he proceeded to reel in a huge catch – defender Johann Laxdal. Displaying wonderful technique the ‘catch’ flapped his way across the turf and was hauled up by Bjornsson and a number of his team mates. The players then posed with their big catch for a photo take.

Millions have watched the YouTube video of the Icelandic “The Angler” goal celebration and the Stjarnan FC has achieved a newfound stardom. But the club now admits that they are now under pressure to make fans laugh.  They have to keep trying to stay fresh and brainstorm for more novel goal celebration routines. It was hard to do better than “The Angler” but since then the team has come up with “The Bicycle” and “The Birth”.  “The Angler” was the brainchild of Bjornsson who thought that one up when he was on a fishing trip with his father. Watch the video and be amused  at the Icelanders’ fishing routine.

The bar has now been set very high just before the start of the new season for professional footballers everywhere.  No longer will the one arm held aloft, or shirt over head routines suffice. Creativity is the name of the game now and it will be hard to beat this elaborate Icelandic fishy routine.

Kudos to the club for taking the art of goal celebration to a whole new level.
